We are excited to announce that FFP’s Walter and Leonore Annenberg Center for Information Science and Technology at Caltech was tapped for “Project of the Year” for the 2011 Sustainable Innovation Awards. This is the inaugural year of this awards program by the Los Angeles chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, which is intended to recognize sustainable excellence that goes above and beyond LEED credit achievement. The Annenberg IST Center won in the category of Indoor Environmental Quality in addition to this year’s top prize. FFP is extremely honored to have received such praise. Thank you to the 2011 USGBC/LA, and congratulations to our exceptional project team and client, Caltech, for their strong collaboration that made this success possible.

Four projects were recognized for sustainable excellence by the Architectural Foundation of Los Angeles (AFLA) at last night’s AIA/LA Design Awards Gala, including FFP’s Sunnylands Center & Gardens at the Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands. The Design Green Awards were created in 2008 by the AFLA to support and recognize the metamorphosis of design as architecture explores a language of sustainability. This is the second consecutive year that FFP has been honored by this organization, having received an Honor Award for the Annenberg Community Beach House in 2010. FFP would like to thank the AFLA and the 2011 Design Green Jury for this great honor.

Do not miss the upcoming show, Women Hold Up Half The Sky at the Skirball Cultural Center, co-designed by Frederick Fisher and Partners Architects. We hope you have a chance to see this important exhibition, opening this Thursday, October 27th through March 11th, 2012.

Inspired by the critically acclaimed book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, this exhibition addresses gender equality as the human rights cause of our time. Confronting the malign persistence of sex trafficking, gender-based violence, and maternal mortality, the exhibition tells stories of women from around the globe who have changed their lives through education, economics, and self-determination.

Experience these tales of perseverance, courage, and hope—and celebrate how individuals can be part of workable solutions.

A groundbreaking ceremony to kick off construction of the new Alfond-Lunder Family Pavilion will be held on Friday, October 21 at 6pm. The 26,000 square foot expansion to the Colby College Museum of Art is the third FFP-designed expansion to the Museum in the last decade.

The $15-million project was initiated in response to Peter and Paula Lunder’s promised gift of art in 2007. The project will include a sculpture terrace, a classroom for museum education and outreach, and 10,000 square feet of new exhibition space. Art Department studios will occupy the top floor of the addition, which is anticipated to achieve LEED-silver certification.

The new space will open during Colby’s bicentennial year, and the opening exhibition in July 2013 will present works from the Lunder Collection.
