Santa Ynez Residence

Location: Santa Ynez, CA
Project Size: 7,000 SF
Project Completion: 2006
Awards: Design Merit Award, AIA, Los Angeles

Merging with the landscape, this home for an artist and lawyer fulfills the owners’ desires for a compound that responds to the area’s hot summers and cold winters. FFP created a scheme based on a grid of 25 squares, combining the architects’ interest in the “square” and “box” forms with the owner’s square paintings. Three distinct zones for living, sleeping, and working are organized around a central courtyard that extends the living space outdoors when weather permits. Large sliding glass panels further blur the boundary between inside and outside and offer alternate views through the courtyard of the contemplative, serene, and quiet landscape. The volumes are boldly covered in corrugated COR-TEN® steel that oxidizes into a rich brown color that complements the earthy surroundings.
