Annenberg Community Beach House &
Marion Davies Guest House

FFP’s transformation of the historic Marion Davies Beach House into the Annenberg Community Beach House multi-use public beach recreation facility has been heralded by architecture, civic, and government organizations, and embraced by the public. Located on the former Marion Davies/William Randolph Hearst estate on Santa Monica State Beach, the complex includes the landmarked Julia Morgan-designed guest house and pool, and new indoor/outdoor recreation and event spaces. A colonnade of white concrete columns echoes the original mansion in scale and rhythm while framing an event room and terrace that overlook the historic pool area and afford panoramic ocean and mountain views. The historic guest house now supports public meetings, and a new event house accommodates larger events. Additional amenities include children’s play area, restaurant, gardens, concession building, and beach volleyball courts. Creating a public gateway to the beach, the facilities stand as an icon for the site’s history and a framework for myriad community uses—day and night. Artist Roy McMakin’s site-specific installation playfully refers to domesticity and history.
